Coco Chanel once said ”A woman with good shoes is never ugly”. It is hard to image you could ever have too many pairs of shoes but let’s have a look at the key styles this autumn and winter which will get you through the season with style and versatility.
This season is all about experimenting with fabrics (faux-fur or suede) and bright colours. Must-have styles for shoes vary from super-sexy to tough-luxe styles, reinventing classic staples or welcoming new silhouettes altogether. You can choose from lace-up flats to biker boots, dainty ankle strap heels to patterned pumps. Sharp-looking flats, sleek heels and edgy boots compete in making this season’s biggest shoe statement.
The most versatile trend as you can wear ankle boots with almost any outfit and they were seen on catwalks in many different versions, i.e. Céline kept it real simple with a round toe and a block heel while Chloe added laces and a buckled strap. 3.1 Phillip Lim gave it a peep toe and a couple of layers while Givenchy added multicoloured python strips and a curved heel.
Over-the-knee (or knee-high) boots are at the top of the list of must-haves for this season. Ultra-tall boots may seem a bit daunting, however finding the right height and proportion will guarantee they are flattering. It definitely worthwhile to invest. Go for sleek, skinny boots and pair it with a mini dress, mini skirt or super-skinny jeans.
T-bar pumps made a forceful comeback this season. They have a certain charm adding graceful moves to your steps and evoking the glory of decades long gone. However the classic shoe is not the same as designers added a modern twist – double straps at Fendi, ornate embellished heels at Dolce & Gabbana, slanted straps at Stella McCartney and major toe cleavage at Balenciaga.
Masculine influences are a huge hit for this season and footwear is no exception. Designers such as Valentino, Fendi, Bottega Veneta, and Jil Sander sent loafer inspired shoes down the catwalk; some patent, some suede, and some with fur.
This micro trend is probably the least versatile, especially for ones who are loving in a cold rainy climate zone. However open-toe boots added a a new dimension to this fall’s powered-up attitude and I think it could be fun to wear during transitional season. It has been seen at 3.1 Phillip Lim, Kenneth Cole and Jason Wu.
Sleek pumps are timeless and classic and they almost never go out of fashion. This season try classic pumps with beautiful print. You can choose from animal, winter florals or tartan print.
More masculinity in the form of the shoe-boot. Chloe went for ink blue with tan, while of course Fendi opted for a furry version; Bottega Veneta kept it classic, while Gucci went a little more bootie.
